As the Spring arrives in Tucson I am reminded of a short poem written by the Twelfth Century Zen Master Wu-Men:
Ten thousand flowers in spring, the moon in autumn,
a cool breeze in summer, snow in winter.
If your mind isn’t clouded by unnecessary things,
this is the best season of your life.
I heard this poem read in a meditation class, early in my mindfulness journey, and it has always stayed with me. I do not know what it meant to me then, now I will simply say that it makes me happy and peaceful. A reminder that my busy mind is the obstacle and with awareness of the present moment, everything has its own beauty and significance. Consider it yourself, what might it be like to have a mind that is not clouded by unnecessary things?
